It is recognized world wide that a major source of pollution is industrial processes and
trade premises. Careful management of such land use can significantly reduce the risk of contamination and
also lead to savings in all aspects of production including energy, costs of waste removal/recycling and
cost of compliance with statutory rules.
Managing production and the risk of site contamination is the first and foremost strategy.
This is done through a full inventory and identification of all current and potential risks associated with
contamination. This could include what product is stored on site, transported onto and through the site,
major product movement, waste production, recycling etc. An accurate drainage plan is paramount.
This plan must identify all stormwater outlets, including soakage areas, all sewer connections and any trade
waste connections to the sewer. The next step is to reduce risks through reassessing procedures or the placement
of physical structures (i.e. bunding, roofing, etc). Contingency planning for spills coupled to a procedure to
train and keep staff informed on how to manage this risk is also a necessary service that B & A provide.
